Knyharnia on 30 Brativ Rohatyntsiv street, Lviv

Entrance

Have you been to Lviv, Ukraine? If not, I strongly advise you to spend at least a weekend in this hidden gem of Eastern Europe. You will love it. Besides its bustling restaurant scene and stunning architecture, it is also the incontestable cultural (read literary and music) capital of Ukraine. I am a sucker for small dusty indie bookstores, and while Kyiv where I now live does not really have these (it is a dying kind in any city, thank you all the joe foxes of this world :), it is still possible to find such cosy nooks in Lviv.

Very old shelves

This one on 30 Brativ Rohatyntsiv street is a small place of several rooms selling used and new books. They are mostly in Ukrainian/Russian, but there is also a tiny foreign language section on the right. The greatest part about this shop is that they specialize in rare books, ones that are long out of print and cannot be found anywhere else. The used sections are divided by genres, while the new ones by the publisher – very convenient! The prices for the new books are highish, while the old ones are a bargain. I have bought a copy of Food and Philosophy for 95 hryvnias (around 3 euros) here.

Inside

People swear that this bookshop has the best selection of old books in the whole country. While I am not sure about that, the shop is definitely a must for the Russian/Ukrainian-speakers visiting Lviv.
